Hey everyone! So this is something I've been wanting to start for a while. Cocktail of the week!! (might be bi-weekly) We'll see!
For my first cocktail we introduce...The Improved Whisky Cocktail. Before old fashions were called "Old Fashions" every cocktail was build the same way. Spirits, sugar, bitters, and water. New fancy ingredients were hitting the market like absinthe, maraschino, and other sweet liquors to build cocktails like the one today.
Improved whisky cocktails are the reason why the old fashioned is now the old fashioned. It was never really that popular of a drink so I'd walk into a bar and order a cocktail the "old fashioned way".
The Improved Whisky Cocktail:
2 oz Rye (I only had bourbon on hand)
1 Sugar Cube
1 Barspoon Maraschino Liquor
1 Dash Peychauds Bitters
2 Dashes Angostura Bitters
1 Dash Absinthe
Lemon Peel
Add sugar, bitters, maraschino, and absinthe to your rocks glass. Muddle sugar a little bit with the back of your bar spoon. Add Bourbon, ice, and stir. Take a peel of lemon and express over the top; Rub the rim of the glass with the peel and place in the drink. Enjoy!
This drink is a great way to mix up an old fashioned. The maraschino really drys out the drink while the absinthe gives it a nice herbal quality. Highly recommend!!
A few of notes: I was out of clear ice. Next cocktail will look much better! And I know I'm not the greatest writer. I think that will improve over time. I'd love some feedback as well. Let me know if this is something that you'd like to see more of.
